Another successful Trash Bash at Mouille Point

A very successful trash bash at zeekoevlei!

It's important that we KEEP doing everything possible to tackle plastic pollution in the ocean - this past weekend was dedicated to doing exactly that, as we kicked off the Trash Bash 'year' with our first one at Mouille Point. Along with Consol Glass (who provided some fabulous prizes) and The Ocean Race, we hosted an amazing day filled with buckets of fun. We were also joined by Cape Town's Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, who did his bit in the fight against plastic pollution!

We've adopted Mouille Point as our Trash Bash "home" this year, as it is a busy spot and only 5km from the Two Oceans Aquarium. It has become apparent that, in addition to those who plan on joining us in advance, many people who pass by the beach (in a very popular area) tend to join in on the fun!

We had about 100 people join us on the day, and together, we managed to collect 56.68kg of litter - most of it was plastic. Common items find included sweet wrappers, plastic bags, and lollipop and sucker sticks. Litter on the beach typically ends up being ingested by seabirds or landing in the ocean, where it is swallowed by other marine animals. Either way - if trash is not collected, it can cause serious harm and injury to the animals that inhabit the ocean.

Thank you so much to everybody who joined us at Mouille Point. The huge contribution we made to keep our ocean clean this past Saturday would not have been as effective without each person in attendance. Trash Bash is always an amazing experience - one that not only includes loads of fun, cool prizes, and amazing efforts to save our ocean, but allows us to meet new ocean lovers and reconnect with familiar faces!
