The final countdown: The next steps before Bob's potential release
The goal of the Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation's turtle team is to rescue, rehabilitate and release all our rescued sea turtle patients once they are fully recovered - even for seemingly permanent residents like Bob, the green turtle. However, each patient faces different obstacles and trauma, and thus has their own unique journey while in our care - and Bob is no exception!
Decide to start: Make a conscious decision to protect Bob’s home
As you may know, beloved Bob the green turtle is on track to be released back into the ocean after eight years of rehabilitation - recovering from severe injury as a result of accidentally eating plastic pollution. This means that we will no longer be able to protect him from the human-made hazards of the ocean, which still has the same dangers he faced in the past - so, it is up to all of us to make a difference. We need to protect Bob's home.
Rewilding bob the turtle: half a year of progress with animal behaviourist alexandra panagiotou
Everyone loves Bob, the green sea turtle that has been in long-term rehabilitation at the Two Oceans Aquarium after he was rescued in 2014. Bob became compromised due to a gut full of ingested plastic pollutions, leaving him vulnerable to an infection that caused brain damage. Although Bob has made a full recovery from his physical injuries, his behaviours and levels of activity suggested a loss of brain function, and the expert opinion at the time was that Bob would not be able to survive in the wild. But now, a new rehabilitation technique might be able to help Bob return to the wild at long last!Adorable bobtail squid hitchhiker shows off its incredible camouflage under the microscope
Senior Aquarist Deen Hill is one of the Two Oceans Aquarium team members responsible for collecting and releasing plants and animals from the wild that are brought to the Aquarium. These routinely involve species like the giant sea bamboo in our Kelp Forest Exhibit and the sea star and urchins used in the classroom lessons of the Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation. When Senior Aquarist Deen Hill collected mysids at a nearby marina, he didn't expect to come back with adorable, tiny bobtail squid hitchhikers!Bob the turtle features on new mural at seapoint's pavilion rotary park: what inspired its design?
Visitors to the Seapoint Promenade over the past few weeks may have noticed a new addition - a mural featuring our very own legend, Bob the green sea turtle, at the Pavilion Rotary Park. What you might not know is that the creator of this design is none other than our resident creative genius, Graphic Designer Jessica Sloan, who came up with the artwork after being approached by the Waterfront Rotaract, who went on to make it a reality!
