Entangled Cape fur seal darted and rescued by Marine Wildlife team
This particular Cape fur seal had been severely entangled in 2 nooses, which had caused serious injury. For this reason, the seal was not very active when it was spotted by the Marine Wildlife Specialists at the Two Oceans Aquarium. This provided the perfect opportunity to dart the seal and relieve its pain by disentangling it.Meet Kijani, our hero turtle storyteller
Late winter and early spring in South Africa sees what our turtle rehabilitation team refer to as “sub/adult turtle stranding season”, a period of time when our coast experiences more strandings of adult and sub-adult green sea turtles. 2022 has been no exception, with our first large sub-adult green turtle (Chelonia mydas) rescued for the season, on 30 July at Trekoskraal near Paternoster on the West Coast (close to where three-flippered green turtle Geri was rescued in 2021).

Research
The Two Oceans Aquarium, active for 28 years, engages in marine research collaborations with higher education institutions, researchers, and scientists from formal conservation bodies and research institutes, government research departments, and other aquaria. Having supported over 60 research projects, our staff co-authored numerous peer-reviewed journal articles. Guided by an external Research Advisory Board and an internal Research Steering Committee, our research receives final approval from the Ethics Committee. With the Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation, we aim to lead aquarium-based research in Africa.
Conservation
The Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation is committed to carrying out conservation, wild marine animal welfare and research work for the good of our ocean. Many of the Foundation’s projects expand on the existing work of the Two Oceans Aquarium. Through growing partnerships, we’ve been able to extend the impact and significance of our work from Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront to the greater South African coastline.
