Ocean Campus Family Beach Day: A day of fun and learning with Schroders
The Two Oceans Aquarium's Ocean Campus Family Beach Day, sponsored by Schroders, was a unique take on our usual Trash Bash events that brought families and local school learners together at Muizenberg Beach for a morning of activities, environmental stewardship, and community spirit.
We released 12 juvenile loggerhead turtles into iSimangaliso Wetland Park!
The Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation’s Turtle Conservation Centre is thrilled to announce that 12 of the 605 loggerhead turtle hatchlings that were stranded on Western Cape beaches in April have been tagged and released back in the warm waters of iSimangaliso Wetland Park Marine Protected Area (MPA) near their natal beaches. This collaborative effort is exciting for the Turtle Conservation Centre, offering a chance to develop the existing turtle conservation work being done in the area, in South Africa, and beyond our shores.
Thoughts from the 7th International Marine Conservation Conference (IMCC)
From 13 – 18 October 2024, the 7th International Marine Conservation Conference (IMCC) was held in Cape Town. The theme of this year’s IMCC was “Make Marine Science Matter”. Amongst the attendees were enthusiastic Two Oceans Aquarium and Foundation staff, including Dr Judy Mann-Lang (Executive of Strategic Projects), Helen Lockhart (Conservation and Sustainability Manager), and Dr Nathalie Viljoen (Head of Research). Let’s hear their thoughts on the conference…
Working together to mitigate the effects of rabies among Cape fur seals in the Western Cape
Recently, an outbreak of rabies has put the Cape fur seal populations and public safety in jeopardy. Thankfully, several incredible organisations are working to mitigate the effects of the outbreak.

It's our birthday! The Two Oceans Aquarium turns 29
On 13 November 1995, the Two Oceans Aquarium opened its doors for the very first time. Today, we celebrate 29 incredible years of being a hub of Cape Town's ocean tourism, education and conservation communities! Let's take a look back at a few of the amazing things the Aquarium has done over the years!
Our Marine Wildlife Management team learnt how to disentangle whales!
The Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation’s Marine Wildlife Management Programme (MWMP) is devoted to preserving the welfare of the abundant wildlife within the V&A Waterfront and its surroundings. While our team’s most regular interactions are with Cape fur seals, Cape clawless otters, and seabirds, we are also committed to upskilling whenever possible. This extends to learning how to disentangle whales!
Nori the green turtle has been adopted!
Visitors to the Two Oceans Aquarium may be familiar with Nori, a green turtle currently housed in the I&J Ocean Exhibit. Nori has been undergoing rehabilitation with our Turtle Conservation Centre since being rescued in Witsand in May 2023.
Five ocean truths you need to hear
The ocean covers 71% of Earth’s surface. It is home to an estimated 95% of all life, and the planet’s longest mountain range lies under the waves. And yet, we know more about the surface of the moon than we know about our ocean. Misconceptions about the ocean can get in the way of us protecting some of the planet’s most vital resources.
18 000km later: Bheni the green turtle visits Yemen and Djibouti
Many of our turtle community have been keeping up with the exciting tracking updates of Bheni, a green turtle that underwent just over a year of rehabilitation at our Turtle Conservation Centre.
Bheni was rescued in December 2022 with an active infection on his carapace (top shell). Thanks to some much-needed care, rest, and medical treatment, he was finally released into the crystal waters of De Hoop Nature Reserve a year later. Since then, Bheni has been making waves, proving himself a world traveller!
Where do you spend your lost years, little turtle?
In late October, a collaborative team of researchers from Two Oceans Aquarium and Upwell took a boat into the swift Agulhas Current, the southwest boundary current of the Indian Ocean that runs down the east coast of South Africa. There, they released 12 tiny loggerhead turtles with satellite tags attached to their carapaces in an effort to understand how these turtles are using this oceanic highway. Can they swim through it? Does their positioning influence which ocean basin they end up in? What a wonderful opportunity to learn of time that is otherwise lost to the ocean’s depths.
