If you've ever been interested in studying oceanography but aren't sure what it is all about. This course introduces you to some basic concepts in ocean study. Why is the ocean blue and salty? Did you know that the ocean floor is not flat but has various topographical features similar to those seen on land – the most extensive mountain range is in the ocean. What causes the circulation of oceans? Is global warming/ climate change affecting the oceans? What happens to pressure as you dive deeper into the ocean?

This course is aimed at those individuals who have an interest in learning about the properties of the ocean; it’s formation, physical characteristics, and its relationship to other spheres of our planet. Although it is one of our academic courses, the content is simplified, allowing participants to understand and enjoy the various topics, especially for those hoping to do marine sciences at a tertiary level. The course includes some practical aspects and a field study which gives participants exposure to what being an oceanography scientist is all about. Upon completion of the course, participants will have a better understanding of tides, ocean chemistry and other related topics. - Course coordinator, Anzio Abels.
