Ocean Campus Family Beach Day: A day of fun and learning with Schroders
The Two Oceans Aquarium's Ocean Campus Family Beach Day, sponsored by Schroders, was a unique take on our usual Trash Bash events that brought families and local school learners together at Muizenberg Beach for a fun morning full of environmental care and community spirit. Backdropped by the colourful beach huts and stunning mountains, the event showcased the Aquarium and Schroders' dedication to marine education and conservation, making it a memorable experience for all who attended.
Learning through play
The Ocean Campus Family Beach Day was about encouraging children and families to connect with the ocean. The Aquarium set up activity stations where attendees could learn about marine life with the Oceans In Motion mobile classroom, enjoy a puppet show, and make a difference with a Trash Bash beach cleanup. The younger kids were particularly delighted by the puppet show, where beloved characters like Lily the leopard catshark shared ocean-friendly messages and taught valuable lessons about protecting our seas.
Another of the day's highlights was the tug-of-war competition! Lined up in the sand, the teams pulled the rope back and forth with much determination and enthusiasm as their audience cheered them on.
The Aquarium’s ever-popular mascot, Nemo, also made an appearance! Not only does Nemo bring smiles and excitement to young and old alike, but he also serves as an ambassador for the Aquarium's mission, connecting with the younger audience and sparking curiosity about the marine world.
The Trash Bash cleanup station was a hive of activity throughout the day. Armed with refuse bags, gloves, and lots of smiles, attendees collected over 130kg of litter from the coastline. The impressive mound of full bags at the end of the day highlighted the impact that a united community can make in just a few hours.
The event saw a wonderful turnout, with over 150 children and parents, Aquarium staff, and volunteers coming together for a common cause. Schroders’ support helped make the day a resounding success, fostering a sense of community and shared responsibility for the ocean. As always, the Aquarium is proud to play an ongoing role in educating and inspiring everyone to protect marine life by blending joy, community engagement, and environmental action.
As the Two Oceans Aquarium approaches its 30th anniversary in 2025, events like the Ocean Campus Family Beach Day highlight the impact the Aquarium has made over the years in promoting education. Through initiatives like these, the Aquarium continues to inspire future generations to care for our oceans, fostering a community that’s passionate about making a difference. Here’s to many more beach days, community gatherings, and impactful moments in the Aquarium’s journey to protect our marine ecosystems!
