Award season for saving seals
We are so happy to announce that Saving Seals, the short film by local wildlife photographer and conservation ambassador Steve Benjamin of Animal Ocean, won the Grand Prix Award at the International Tourism Film Festival Africa in the Documentary and Television category. The film also won Gold in the Environment & Ecology thematic category. Saving Seals documents the extraordinary measures undertaken by staff of the Two Oceans Aquarium and the Aquarium Foundation to rescue and disentangle seals. The Tara ocean laboratory ship is stopping in Cape Town's V&A Waterfront on its 70 000 kilometre voyage to research the ocean microbiome, climate change and pollution connecting Europe, Africa, South America and Antarctica. Fans of the Two Oceans Aquarium are invited to join our Foundation's Marine Wildlife Management team for a series of urban wildlife walks along the V&A Waterfront's canals and marinas on Friday, 28 April 2023. This is a fantastic opportunity to snap photos of the plants, animals, and organisms you spot and upload them to iNaturalist, a citizen science project. The walk and snacks are free for any active Aquarium members who register in advance. But, very importantly, we ask that everyone who attends please be prepared to install the iNaturalist app on their phones and upload some photos (you can use Aquarium WiFi to upload).

Ragged-tooth sharks are one of the most iconic animals at the Two Oceans Aquarium, with thousands of people taking the opportunity to stop and stare in fascination at our Save Our Seas Foundation Shark Exhibit. Meet Pan, the newest member of our I&J Ocean Exhibit community of sea turtle rehabilitation patients. Pan is a loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta), and despite his diminutive size, Pan can potentially grow to over 450kg - and with proper care at the hands of the Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation team, Pan will get the opportunity to reach that size in the wild!Pan was rescued by members of the public at Struisbaai on 29 April 2019, weighing only 49.5g! Like many of the stranded loggerhead sea turtle hatchlings that wash up on our coastline, Pan was affected by the cold waters around the Western Cape after being ejected from the warmer Agulhas Current - resulting in the turtle becoming "cold-stunned", which in turn can lead to a host of other problems, particularly dehydration, immunocompromise, and metabolic difficulties.Junior biologist course 2022: feedback on our first course of 2022
Phew, what an experience - we just completed our first face-to-face course of 2022, the Junior Biologist Couse. The Junior Biologist Course took place over four Saturdays from 19 February to 12 March 2022. About three hundred applications were received for this course - from this we were able to accept 89 participants, of which we were able to sponsor the attendance of 53 (don't worry - there will be plenty of other opportunities for courses later this year).Long service awards 2022 - thank you to our family!

Once a year, we take the opportunity to thank our long-serving team members with a special event - thank you for everything you do!The morning kicked off with a short message from Two Oceans Aquarium CEO Michael Farquhar, General Curator Tinus Beukes and Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation Executive Chairperson Ann Lamont, highlighting the amazing things our team has been able to accomplish over the past tumultuous two years - and what we can accomplish going forward together. Part of our teams daily routine is patrolling the V&A Waterfront to monitor the local marine wildlife and assist animals in need. Sometimes, this means hopping into a boat and following seals around the local harbour to disentangle those with loops of plastic pollution ensnaring them.Diver24: UCT divers attempting 24-hour diving relay for a good cause this weekend!
It's that time of year again: The Two Oceans Aquarium Dive School is hosting the UCT Underwater Club’s Diver24 fundraising initiative! This 24-hour dive-athon will see UCT Underwater Club members participating in a "scuba diving relay" from noon on Saturday, 6 April, to noon on Sunday, 7 April, in the Two Oceans Aquarium’s I&J Ocean Exhibit! The ever-popular initiative will raise funds for the conservation and education work of the Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation.
