But, it is also a growing city that faces the challenges of fulfilling the human needs of energy provision, clean drinking water, and waste disposal. Nobomvu is a female sub-adult loggerhead sea turtle that was rescued at Gansbaai on 13 July 2021 by the community - a rescue that required the help of over 13 volunteers! On 17 January 2022, the sea turtle rehabilitation team of the Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation released 44 rehabilitated sea turtles approximately 30 nautical miles south of Hout Bay. The turtles were all rehabilitated at the Two Oceans Aquarium over the last several of months after being rescued by members of the public, stranded on Western Cape beaches. The group that was released included Geri, the three-flippered green sea turtle that has been recovering in the I&J Ocean Exhibit for the last couple of weeks.Geri the three-flippered green turtle's rehabilitation is complete - time to be released!
Geri the three-flippered turtle s ready to return to the open ocean - here's what it took to get her release-ready. Geri arrived at the Aquarium for rehabilitation on 25 July 2021. She was rescued at Paternoster weighing 48.5kg, and with her missing front left flipper amputation already completely healed - what was worrying at the time was actually the severe injuries to her front right flipper, which included lacerations deep enough to expose her bone.Highlights of 2021: working together to achieve more
As the world has slowly begun returning to "normal" in 2021, it's been an interesting time to reflect on the people, values and goals that are important, and get our priorities right.
