We released Bokkie, the amputee green turtle, into iSimangaliso Wetland Park!
Bokkie, the amputee green turtle, took her first plunge back into the Indian Ocean off the Kwa-Zulu Natal coast on 21 October 2024! After an arduous year of rehabilitation, our Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation’s Turtle Conservation Centre (TCC) team was thrilled to release Bokkie into the Marine Protected Area of iSimangaliso Wetland Park with the help of the South African Association for Marine Biological Research (SAAMBR). Bokkie was joined by Luna, another green turtle who spent just under a year of rehabilitation at the TCC.

We released 12 juvenile loggerhead turtles into iSimangaliso Wetland Park!
The Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation’s Turtle Conservation Centre is thrilled to announce that 12 of the 605 loggerhead turtle hatchlings that were stranded on Western Cape beaches in April have been tagged and released back in the warm waters of iSimangaliso Wetland Park Marine Protected Area (MPA) near their natal beaches. This collaborative effort is exciting for the Turtle Conservation Centre, offering a chance to develop the existing turtle conservation work being done in the area, in South Africa, and beyond our shores.
Nori the green turtle has been adopted!
Visitors to the Two Oceans Aquarium may be familiar with Nori, a green turtle currently housed in the I&J Ocean Exhibit. Nori has been undergoing rehabilitation with our Turtle Conservation Centre since being rescued in Witsand in May 2023.
18 000km later: Bheni the green turtle visits Yemen and Djibouti
Many of our turtle community have been keeping up with the exciting tracking updates of Bheni, a green turtle that underwent just over a year of rehabilitation at our Turtle Conservation Centre.
Bheni was rescued in December 2022 with an active infection on his carapace (top shell). Thanks to some much-needed care, rest, and medical treatment, he was finally released into the crystal waters of De Hoop Nature Reserve a year later. Since then, Bheni has been making waves, proving himself a world traveller!
Where do you spend your lost years, little turtle?
In late October, a collaborative team of researchers from Two Oceans Aquarium and Upwell took a boat into the swift Agulhas Current, the southwest boundary current of the Indian Ocean that runs down the east coast of South Africa. There, they released 12 tiny loggerhead turtles with satellite tags attached to their carapaces in an effort to understand how these turtles are using this oceanic highway. Can they swim through it? Does their positioning influence which ocean basin they end up in? What a wonderful opportunity to learn of time that is otherwise lost to the ocean’s depths.
