Why are there turtles in the I&J Ocean Exhibit?
Visitors to the Two Oceans Aquarium may not realise that the I&J Ocean Exhibit plays a central role in the work of the Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation’s Turtle Conservation Centre! At any given time, at least one turtle can be seen in the exhibit. The I&J Ocean Exhibit only houses these turtles temporarily – they are there for a specific purpose: Rehabilitation.

Celebrating the holiday season with the release of Nobomvu, the loggerhead turtle!
On 22 December 2023, the Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation’s Turtle Conservation Centre released Nobomvu, a loggerhead turtle, off the Cape Point coast into the warm Agulhas Current. Nobomvu was fitted with a satellite tag, two flipper tags and a PIT tag. This was a joyous celebration as the Foundation team watched her return to her ocean home. Joined by 28 loggerhead turtle hatchlings and two yearlings, the “Red Lady” added some festive cheer to the start of the summer holiday season, inspiring the collective action needed to protect our oceans.
Meet “Turtle Dad”: The Radiologist who branched out to turtles!
Many of our turtle community members may not know that our Turtle Conservation Centre works closely with a doctor not of turtles but of humans… Dr Peter Berndt, a Radiologist at Winelands Radiology! Peter has been instrumental in the journeys of many of the turtles undergoing rehabilitation at our Turtle Conservation Centre. He’s even studied turtle anatomy and pathology in pursuit of his work with us! Peter has a special connection with Nobomvu, the loggerhead turtle who has had a long and arduous rehabilitation
